Sewage gas

Every year, in Polish sewage-treatment plants large amounts of sewage sludge, a by-product of wastewater treatment, are produced. Sludge is dangerous from the point of view of epidemiology due to the pathogenic bacteria, viruses and parasites contained in it. One of the methods of sludge conversion into the so-called stabilised sewage which is not onerous for the environment, is the process of a biological, anaerobic biotransformation (methane fermentation). In this process the sewage sludge becomes stabilised (neutralised), its final amount is significantly reduced and biogas is generated, the main ingredient of which is methane – a valuable source of energy (renewable energy sources).

Out of 1 ton of wet sewage sludge 35 to 280 m³ of biogas can be obtained, depending on the composition of the sludge. The energy produced from biogas is used mainly for internal needs of the sewage-treatment plant which has great demand for electric energy and heat. The use of biogas reduces the consumption of conventional raw materials as well as emission of pollutants resulting from combustion of such raw materials. The energy obtained from biogas is a pure energy, it does not impose a burden on natural environment and, what is more, it improves the energy and financial balance of an enterprise.
