PGNiG plans to engage in biogas and biomethane

9 July 2020

Polskie Górnictwo Naftowe i Gazownictwo SA (PGNiG) is the most active company in Poland engaged in the exploration and extraction of natural gas and oil, gas import, as well as, through key subsidiaries, storage, sales, distribution of gas and liquefied fuels and the production of heat and electricity.
Jerzy Kwieciński, president of PGNiG, in an interview for Dziennik Gazeta Prawna daily at the end of April announced that the company will update its strategy for 2017-2022 this year. It will take into account the opportunities that arise on the national and European market. PGNiG intends to become a multienergy concern and one of those companies which will pursue the objectives of the EU Green Deal in Poland. As part of the new strategy, the company plans to be involved in, among others, biogas and biomethane investments.
Despite difficult conditions related to the coronavirus epidemic, the PGNiG Group does not suspend further investments in the expansion of its gas distribution network.  Under the framework implemented since 2018 Programme for the Acceleration of Investments in the Polish Gas Network, which has been implemented since 2018, 126 communes have already gained access to the gas network (as at the end of Q1 2020). As a result, over 33 million people in Poland, i.e. almost 87% of the country's population, live in the territory of the municipalities that have connection to gas grid. Ultimately, by 2022, it is planned to launch gas distribution services in 300 new communes in total and to carry out 9 investments related to the elimination of transmission congestion.
